I had a light set lower than the vase pointing up at the twigs in the vase.
I held a reflector to the front/right of the vase.

`vignetting
`softened the black area
`contrast
`border
`resized
`sharpened

it is quite amazing how much more dramatic this is at full screen than as a thumb. the thumb almost makes it look as if it is dull and unappealing, but the light on the twigs and the way you used vignetting really centers our attention

I'd have preferred the black of the frame to be the same width on all sides.
Not overly happy with the white in the border not being white in the top and bottom.
Whilst I see the vignette works well here I'd like to see less of it as its cutting into the subject.
Off centre has been covered below but is the vase tilting to the right ever so slightly?
I'd like to see a little more seperation twixt the vase and background and some more light on the front of the vase.
Going back to the off centre reply you made I think if you removed the 'twig' that curves to the right you could centre the vase without upsetting the general composition BUT, that 'twig' really helps the overall image so guess it remains off centre ;)

Simple subject, simple setup, simple lighting, simple (read basic) editing, SIMPLY lovely image.

Now, you'd best stay on your best form Soni or the quote that started this comment will be back to bight you ;)

OH the nerve! hahaha..just kidding. thank you..I feel the same way. I am not a big fan of this shot although I worked at the lighting in my studio for an hour. It was well worth the time.

Thanks so much for the comment, everyone!

I like this very much! You played the sharpness of the twigs against the softness of the rest of the image very well. Nice work.

I did not expect this from the thumbnail; the thumbnail looked dark to me. When I opened it I saw the subtlety involved in your lighting and it is not dark at all. That vignette just makes the shot. How did you create the vignette?

I also noticed the off-center vase, before I read the comments below. This tends to happen to me frequently, especially with horizons in landscapes. Sometimes it's a matter of choosing what looks straight, as opposed to what actually is straight.

Symmetry, subtle light, and midtones are what I learn about from your photo. To put them all together and produce an enjoyable viewing experience is what you did. I will have to try something out with these elements.

Yes it is off center. sigh..I tried to crop it to center it but the twigs on top bugged me way to bad so I kept it like it is. Hey..at least 1 out of 15 see it. haha.. great eye!

I agree with what someone else said, the thumbnail looks ordinary and the larger size is a beautiful surprise. I was not expecting the twigs to pop out like that - very beautiful! NO glycerine..just the light sitting behind it. It was fun playing with the lighting. Surprising how much you can learn while taking an how out of your time messing with something.

Still nice, of course.

Oh Soni! This is gorgeous. It reminds me of those pretty lamps we used to get when we were teenagers that were all lit up along the stems. Only this is elegance a naturale. Stunning lighting the way it provides that striking vignaette. This is such a beautiful black and white. And lately, I have been so drawn to centered compositions.

Elegant! The darks are so rich, and I think the light lines in the vase keep the bottom part of the photo from appearing too dark. The vignetting works well here.

The twigs look like they have little teensy electric lights on them. Rich and refined. You've made what is often considered a static composition work quite well.

From the thumbnail I thought this would be interesting but I wasn't sure about the vignetting, but now I see it, everything seems to be very well put together, even the frame working with the composition. Excellent use of black, turning the whites into ice/diamonds.

Love how the little knots on the twigs pop! Excellent contrast there.

Vase. A frontal, formal still life, a classic style vase, control lighting w/conventional portrait style - cameo-vignette back and frame. Shows contrast, texture and a very interesting shimmer on the flora.

From thumbnail it looks ordinary, but when opened it, it is something really good to look at.
There is a subtle feeling about it, you got to spend time with it to admire it.
Well I would not want to change anything in it.
