first time I went nuts and used half a dozen layers - I may not do that again any time soon - there is a virtue in keeping it simple. :) And this looks more impressive before I had to resize. :P

anywho:

started with an overlay as the base layer this time - Brad's vignette

over this, I added the photo of the geese/landscape in a new layer, and blended it 100% in luminosity mode

next up that same vignette from Brad, in color burn mode 100%

threw in a levels layer to bring in the highlights and shadows a bit - I like that slightly blown-out look you get with very old photos

then goodman's overlay - I stretched this way out in free transform, so only the most in focus part of it lay over the photo, didn't use the whole overlay - blended this at luminosity 25%

another goodman layer, this, in overlay, 69%

another layer, using this, in overlay 29%

another goodman texture, this one I think isn't available anymore - was more of a frame, with a lot of yellow fill in the middle - used in overlay at 75%, after I desaturated it so the yellow toned down quite a bit.

then I grew horrified at how many layers I accumulated, or grew satisfied with what I was seeing, not sure which, and wrapped things up with a bit of high pass and a slight USM after resizing.

I'm exhausted! And you should be too, after reading all this.

Its fun to have lots of layers every now and then! I think all your layers has been a success :)

I think the darkness all around the photo lends an ominous feel to the shot. I keep having the theme of Jaws running in my head. Very nice emotional piece. With that feel of danger it still looks very very peaceful too. Creates tension and that is always good.

It's so easy to lose yourself in layering, isn't it? Good work. Lovely toning.

Love the crop on this, has a very cinamatic feel to this. I love the tone and the vignette used, well done!

wow thats quite a recipe, i thik the vignetting works here, and i think you could have got this effect
without so many layers, but its fun playing. :)

Your hard work paid off krnodil & I did enjoy reading the Legend. I like the look of Old photos, too. I am mystified by the dark shadow on the far shore, & the geese seem unaware of the possible danger lurking there. Reminds me of Peter & the Wolf. A Classic.
