Challenge: Free Study 2008-02 (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-40D
Lens: Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Location: New York, NY
Date: Feb 9, 2008
Aperture: f/4
ISO: 1250
Shutter: 1/40

Date Uploaded: Feb 11, 2008

This is an attempt at an HDR shot, composed of 5 exposures of a single RAW file.
RAW file was exposed using Canon's software into JPEGs. Photomatix was used to combine the images and tone-map.
Then some dodging and burning in photoshop, adjustment to saturation, resize, unsharp mask, add border and save for web.
One thing I didn't know about combining images into HDR is how it amplifies the noise levels. I shot this at ISO 1250, which is relatively clean on a 40D, but the resulting HDR image was noisier than I would have liked. If I had a tripod handy I would have used it.

This shot was under rated in the challenge. The wonderful warmth of the colours is comforting.

I like the grandeur and the warmth you created with this shot. And yes, HDR creates its own noise in addition to amplifying anything you may have had already.

I'm inclined to like black and white renditions of this subject with plenty of shadows and motion blur. But yours is a good reporterly shot.

Cool perspective and good job getting the exposure right. I'm getting a bit of a color cast on my monitor; it seems yellow, probably due to the lights.

I tried this shot myself and never got it this symmetrical (even from the same steps) very good exposure for the light in there.

Nice subject. Good lens choice. People on the move give it a lot of movement. Post processing has gone a bit too far IMO.

I like the perspective and the effect of what I assume to be tonemapping, however it's a little too dark..
