This is for the panning challenge. I got my friend to ride his unicycle and go down the hall doing his rubik's cube. I had asked him to use a darker shirt because in earlier shots in the day he was wearing a gray hoodie that blended into the background and I wanted him to pop more. I'm not too good on the technique of panning, and this was the only photo where there was a good pan and you could basically tell what was going on. In the photo I try and juxtapose the relatively static activity of solving a rubik's cube with riding a unicycle. In post op, I really brought the colors out and fixed the white balance to make Steve (my friend) become the main point of reference in the picture.

The cube looks good for a pan shot in close quarters with so much going on. A crop to vertical, by removing most of the wall on the left of the door would have helped with the score. I expect that you left the wall in so that the rider would be on the "thirds" line, and to show that he was in fact riding the unicycle. The people voting on DPC seem to want an unmistakable subject to pop right out of the image when they open it. Sharpness is a major plus with voting too. I thought you pulled this off pretty well for an indoor shot.
The easiest pan shots are done with a medium tele lens, or zoom at max range. That way the speed of your rotation to capture the moving subject is much lower than when the subject is passing very close to the camera. Just track with the subject, and remember to keep the camera motion going and follow thru after the shot a little to keep the the motion uniform while the shutter is open.
Thank you for the thoughtful comment on one of my images.

Tough to give this photo a good rank... Out of focus, the whole left side of this picture is kind of wasted space...

everything in this photo is blurry and there is no major focal point

The whole photograph is a little out of focus. You may want to try adding more value.

The panning effect is too subtle for me. Try a longer shutter to accentuate the feeling of motion and try to keep the subject more sharp.

white balance is off here, and having everything blurry doesn't work for me. the setting for the shot (in a school hallway?) doesn't add anything either.

too blurry, not enough movement for panning.
