This was taken last weekend on a gorgeous morning at sunrise. My hubby and I met a couple of our very athletic, if not a little crazy :) friends from Colorado who were running in a 100-mile ultra marathon. We got up at 4:30am Saturday morning to send them off, then for the next 27 hours and 28 minutes, we met them at various checkpoints to bring carby foods, changes of clothes for different weather conditions, and a couple of times medicine/bandages and stuff. One of them had to drop out of the race after 30 miles because of an injury -- but the other one finished! We really had the best time, and felt connected to the other people meeting their runners, and felt sad as so many of them dropped off as the day/night went on. But oh how emotional that finish line was! One man finished who was 71! And lots of women finished too.

This photo was taken while we waited for them at the 17-mile check-in.

I would have never pictured this scene in b/w but it works so well! I'm not convinced about the large border, but it does look nice...

I love the tones in those trees and it really adds great debth to the shot. Did you do any kind of HDR on this? It is a great b/w conversion.

71 year old finished 100 miles? That is amazing!

Gorgeous landscape. The pattern of the trees and the reflection on the water is awesome. About the top left part where the sky is seen ... I thought about it and I think it breaks a little from the scene, I'm still not sure if it adds anything if you remove it but with out it my eyes concentrate more on the boat, otherwise they wonder around the scene fist, probably looking for something else bright.

Sounds like that was a very long day. Sorry one of your friends didn't finish but 100miles? thats some run.

ooh, very nice Sandy! I can see this as a poster size print hanging on someones wall. I love how you edited the shot and as has been said it has a painterly feel to it. My only (minor) niggle is that where the top left trees meet the sky it looks a little strange but that might be my eyes :(

*edited to add*

am not normally a fan of big wide borders but this one works very well with the picture :)

First thing I notice is all the verticals, then the textures which amazingly at this dpc size as well as in BW really come through with incredible variety. Lovely composition set off by dark lone tree and point (horizontal) and (half) dark standing figure and boat (horizontal).
(And thanks for comment on my pet; if you ever left the site I'd give up on the doggy pics).

Nice story and a great pic. I love the reflections in this shot, it's like the boat is on glass that water is so smooth. Good eye and great capture!

The right time of day. An hour in the morning is worth two in the afternoon. Not to mention, the early bird... To capture feelings and transmit is high art and you did in this photo.

What a beautiful and tranquil setting to be found while helping your friends go through such a grueling race.

The best part of this is the way you have composed it. And the framing really brings the subject out. Me, as a painter always seek this type of compositions.

Nice to have friends like you looking after runners and both your efforts were clearly rewarded in the sharing of this event and peaceful and beautiful photo.

What a gorgeous place to get stuck waiting! I love that one tree on the left, growing the wrong way, and I love the puffy softness of the lighter colored leaves. Light was perfect for this - glad you took advantage of it!

That's to bad that the two of them couldn't finish together but nice to hear one of them did. That's awesome. Sounds like you had an amazing time and with lots of nice weather to go with it. How lucky! You were in the right spot at the right time to capture this photo and you did an amazing job with the refections, contrast and comp. Wow, I could just sit and view this for hours. I think it's cool how you have the boaters darker than the background which makes them pop out. Very good work here!

awesome! It almost has a painting type of quality to it. I like the boat in the image which helps give it perspective.
