Taken during the ice carving festival. Just before sunset we decided to head down to the lake to catch the sunset. The trip was longer than we thought and I ended up going by myself since we had the stroller and the girls were cold. This is an ice-encrusted walkway with water on both sides that run parallel with a lighthouse on the other side of the harbor. I was amazed at how many people were out there navigating the ice and snow. This was well after sunset and I was on my way in and there were people still heading out!
I was trying to capture how much ice was really out there, both on the walkway and in the water.
Lots of editing:
convert from raw
hdr/tonemap
tons of color adjustments
levels
dodge/burn
nik efex glamour glow filter
rotate/crop
resize
Edit for Roz:
I was using ISO 400 for many shots before, I just didn't change it back. When I bracket for HDR I want a faster shutter speed to reduce ghosting artifacts due to moving clouds, waves, etc.
The shots are bracketed, but you still get more range with different exposures compared to a single raw, and less noise in shadows. It anything is blown out in the single raw you'll never get it back, but with bracketed you have a greater chance that one of the exposures isn't blown out. |

Fantastic capture of the sunset. It really was that beautiful! Amazing texture in the ice in the foreground. You were quite brave to venture out there on that ice! |

Love the sunset! The contrast between the smooth sky and the broken up ice is wonderful! |

absolutely stunning ken .. the most beautiful colours and scene .. love your focus .. so sharp on the foreground ice .. excellent perspective too ..
interested in the camera settings ..
firstly why iso 400 ??
& is that bracketing with the three shutter speeds ?? .. over-expose, neutral and under-expose ?... i'm thinking you could get the same result without a tripod if you shoot in raw & just process the one photograph three times with the different exposures ?? .. sorry to ask you all these questions, but you're getting the most amazing results in your photography/processing .. :) |

That's amazing,,,, and beautiful. You put some effort into getting this to share. It's appreciated.
The only thing that I see that could make the shot a little better would be to dodge the lighthouse a little to help make it more of a focal point in the overall scene.
Many of my after sunset shots are among my favs because of the beautiful light of the afterglow. |

That looks nuts! It definitely looks "ice encrusted", very cool. |
