And now for something completely different (for me)...

I've held this shot in my workshop for a couple of weeks feeling it just wasn't that good. It’s too flat, too stark, blown highlights, something’s just not right.

But every time I browse through the workshop I find it capturing my attention. I don't know if it’s the mood, the contrast along the ridgeline, the sun barely visible through the clouds or something all together different.

So I’m going to throw it into the mix. I’m really curious if it will resonate with anyone else. If it does, I hope you can help understand why :P

Yes, I looked at this before and was bothered by the flattish strip of water at the bottom. Hard to tell if you need more or less or none of it; or maybe some texture or variation in it to help hold its own and/or complement the wonderful dark but contrasty drama above.

Yup, nice image and agree with Trevor that it might be best to lose the water. some D&B may even make this more dramatic - glad you posted it.

I see what you mean. It is so dark but then there is that little ray of light just to the right of center. I like it... like the opening of a new dawn, or a good change is coming.

Great shot, I love dramatic lighting. I might crop out the bottom which appears to be water or something and just start the frame with the dark tree. either way it still rocks!

For me what does it here is the contrast. You have the mostly dark area on the bottom, a large gray area of gray above, and then the turbulent clouds with bright sunlight "breaking through". This hints at a calm being interrupted by something on the opposite end of the spectrum, and the calm will soon be gone. Your title sums it up well.

As photographers, we're kinda fascinated with light and the way it plays upon things. Here you have the extremes - darkness and light - spread across your canvas. And while the way the light shafts slash to the ground is nice, what draws me is the very small amount of light on the left. The dark is winning there, but the light hasn't given up the fight yet.

I can't believe you didn't love this right off. I love it! It has such simple lines for a landscape -- and such a dramatic sky. What else do you need for a stunning photograph! I'm sure glad you shared it with us. It definitely resonates with me!

I like it. You have used the rule of thirds very effectively in this image. The light in the upper right give it a focus and draws me to the rest of the image. Very well done and well processed.

Great shot - the sun rays really jump out at you. I like the simplicity.

how dare you keep this to yourself.

the beams of light coming down though the clouds are awesome, like the are attentionally highlighting that group of trees
