The one thing that makes this shot similar to the brown is the fact that the subject is a flower. I figure that's close enough, but we'll see. I was planning on taking a few shots of these flowers anyway, so no biggie. I like the way it turned out. I'm on a bit of an acidify kick lately, apparently.

Shot in RAW: adjusted white balance and exposure

No crop!
Acidify action
Dodge/burn/clone a bit here and there

first of all let me say that you chose a wonderful flower! Even tho it isnt the same flower as the orginal one I think its "close enough" tho I dont think voters thought the same thing. Without knowing that you used an "acid filter" one would think that this had the wrong white balance. so my suggestion for using a filter is to either go all the way or dont go. you have to make the use of a filter so obvious here that voters will KNOW that it was used or they will vote you down because they got the wrong conclusion. after sitting here for about 20 minutes just looking at the flower I have finaly decided what it is about it that "felt" weird. I knew it was something about the center but just coudnt put my finger on it. Its the blur of the orange. the blur of the orange doesnt match the blur of the petals. This is from using such a small apeture. increasing your ISO and apeture will let the DOF widen and have a more evenly sharp photo. I notice in your notes that you did some cloneing. thats good but you left two imperfection on the petal int he bottom left of the photo. DPC likes perfection so keep that in mind when your editing. all in all I think you did a good job on this but it was such a competive challenge. keep up the great work.

Are the colors in this flower really this muted? You captured the texture, but the essence is missing.

nice take on the original - I think your colors could have been brighter and your dof a little deeper. overall, I like the composition, and the focus where it's at is pretty sharp

yes, it's a flower and it is pretty, but it's far away of being a rendition of the brown ribbon shot. besides that, you seem to have had a problem with white balance.
