This is Penny, a 15+ years gal who doesn't take crap from any of the young 'uns. Defends her box against all-comers. She's an odd-looking cat, not particularly graceful or photogenic, but she's got a boatload of personality. Usually she likes me, but she appears here to be considering taking action against my too-close-for-comfort lens. :)

I find this shot's processing acceptable enough to submit, but I'm not completely thrilled with it - for what I had on me at the time and the light that was available, I had to resort to 3200 ISO - the 5D handled that well and I took further noise removal measures, but still the shot has a crunchy look to it that I wish it didn't have - hey, since she's a crusty old gal, maybe the processing is appropriate. ;)

But the look on her face is priceless, so in it goes.

Ok, first, I understand why DPC gave it a 4.6, starting with many people probably defining "portrait" to mean "staged, with the pet sitting in a perfect position in front of a perfect background."

Feh! I say. The instant I opened it her eyes grabbed me and they never let go. Yeah, the bright pink is a bit distracting, but I think this is a powerful example of cats' power in general and hers specifically.

What I like about this is the candidness of the shot. It's like you are being allowed for this fleeting moment to take this photo. The eyes kind of say it all here. Lots of emotion being conveyed and that is what makes this a cool picture.

Ah, I have a couple grumpy cats too so I can relate! Her expression is great!

Reminds me of a similar picture I did of a friends cat. The pink and rounded edges create a magnificent frame. Penny does not look amused. ;)

I love the look you captured. to me it looks like she i about to slap the lens, (hope shes declawed). I didnt vote on it but to me it should have scored higher

I gave this a 7, which is my way of applauding during a challenge. Due to a crappy week, I never got back through my 7 bin, or I'd've bumped and/or commented. It's a real-seeming capture, an unguarded moment, rare among pet portraits.

Way WAY better than voters indicated. I was one of your 7s and should have come back to bump it. This really was "cat" - she seemed very regal in her domain, and just a wee bit protective of it as well. I quite liked it.

Pity the focus is so soft, I really like the composition -- kitty peaking around the corner.

The editing techniques leave me feeling nervous. The composition is different though.

I love the fact that he has no ears. It makes him look like a wonderfully demented sock puppet!

Catitude! I like it! I think I'd really love to see this in b/w as the tones are so pink

I need at least a hint of an ear to make him/her not look deformed.
