These two eastern grey kangaroos have been frequenting our backyard for quite sometime - They are mother and daughter. It seems, however, that we may have a new arrival hopping around soon. If you look carefully you will notice that mum (on the left) has a 'pinky' in her pouch. OMG!!! What's a pinky you might ask?
Well, at about two months after mating the tiny embryonic kangaroo emerges from it's mother's body and slowly climbs up her abdomen and into her pouch, it is about 15cm long and hairless - hence the name 'pinky'. As of course the joey grows, it grows hair, but it is about 12 months before it will leave it's mother's pouch for good...

This is a 'pinky' - I didn't take this photo.

Great catch, Greg! Soon they will be eating out of your hand. I see the 'pinkie' peeking out of mom's pouch.

Cool denizens of your backyard. My first pinky -- never knew about them before. Thanks for the lesson.

Really cool! It's neat to see them.. Are they mindful of people?
If hanging around back yard they must be used to people..
LOVE them..

Awww, it's peeking its head out for you!! It's funny how kangaroos seem like such exotic animals to me, but I'm sure they are just an everyday thing for you!
