Challenge: Led Zeppelin (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) for Nikon
Location: North Fork American River, California
Date: Feb 25, 2008
Galleries: Nature, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Feb 25, 2008

I never really thought a lot of decisive moments in landscape photography. But this was my first shot of this scene at this vantage point, and all the rest the low fog enveloped the single tree in the lower right and the shots were not quite the same.

Taken from the perspective of a spirit flying.

EDIT: tonemapped to get definition in the clouds. Dodge and burn the clouds. masked out tone mapping on the hills. gradient map with a selective color adjustment underneath to process to black and white. selective levels and curves to selected areas. Resized to 720 and ran Luko USM. Crop/Save for Web.

LED ZEPPELIN RULES!!!!!!

Post challenge: Thanks for the votes and comments. I never get up before sunrise to shoot, I may have to do it more often. :)

This is WONDERFUL! I so think of you as the master of B&W - I am always inspired by your conversions.

I can very much see the need to have that single tree included. It adds significantly to the balance and mood of the shot. Excellent processing to capture the softness and stillness of the morning fog. And yes, if this is what happens, you should definitely get up early once in awhile.

I missed this during the challenge (didn't enter or vote), but this is one of those WOW shots. Great job on the B&W conversion and capturing so much detail. This is one I'd love to see HUGE on a wall somewhere.

Reminds me of a very early morning drive through the mountains and "hollers" of West Virginia.

Really like the mist ΓΆ€“ also believe you have used it perfectly in the image to relay the mood of Led Zeppelin music to the viewer.

THIS is what I wanted to do, but our mountain weather forecast wasn't cooperating. :/ So...I'm jealous, but not holding it against you. :-) One of my top picks for the challenge. The diagonals, and the lower right piece really make this work. Well composed and nicely captured! Good luck.

Nice mist. I think B/W works well. I find it a little uninteresting.
