The over all focus seems a bit soft.

Looks like you took this in the middle of the day in very bright sunlight. Taken under overcast conditions or at a different time of day can make a dramatic difference. Shadows will be less strong and colours will be more vibrant and less blown out. Also I notice that the left of your image is out of focus, while the right is relatively sharp - it doesn't look intentional - maybe blurred due to camera shake or recomposed after focusing on the right? If you wanted to use a shallow DOF to emphasize a particular part of the flower you might try shooting at a different angle. Hope this was helpful. :)

I think the odd shape, (just the lower half of the flower) works against this very good picture.

Too much light? I can sense there is a ton of detail that wants to be shown but just needs the right light. Maybe a bit soft in the focus too? If this was a flash shot then maybe you could experiment with using sheer or very white cloth a foot or so in front of the flash to defuse.
