Challenge: Black and White in Color II (Advanced Editing VII*)
Collection: Successful Challenge Entries
Camera: Nikon D300
Lens: Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Nikon
Location: Cleveland
Date: Feb 26, 2008
Aperture: 7.1
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/100
Date Uploaded: Feb 26, 2008

This was a good day to get monochromatic with it. This shot is me as I often do using a tripod. The snow was blowing off the lake so the lens (polarizing filter) was getting pretty wet whihc resulted in some uneven tones which I corrected. PP: These photos were amazingly "grey" so I knew it would meet the challenge. Opened in camera RAW originally but I didn't like it much so I started with the JPG- Used Noise ninja to reduce contrast drastically and remove noise pretty drastically too (the dreamy effect is NN and also the drops of snow on my lens). Crop / rotate, used healing brush to remove unwanted footprints. Increased contrast and sharpened problem areas. Used dodge and burn to correct uneven areas. Burned some midetones in tree. Cloned out 2 little bushes peeking over the hill. Predicting a 6.2 (hope)

I love this shot; this is a great example of how photographic technique stands out in the visual arts; the contrast, the detail ...fantastic.

This was by far my favorite in the challenge - nice to see it ribbon!! (That doesn't happen with my favorites very often.) It just has a wonderful awe to it - the beauty of winter at it's finest and I'm quite grateful for the human element in it. Congratulations!

The image really captures the feeling of "here now, gone in a second", a short moment that will disappear. Only thing that I am wondering is if it would have worked better with a slightly larger silhouette... 8 from me.
