I didn't sign up for this side challenge, but I tried the first assignment and have been glued to my computer almost all day. I wish I could say I had a better understanding of what "Difference" does. All I can say is that it has a mind of its own.

I started out with a very blah HDR sunrise that had a pretty funky orange circle in it:

Applied this homemade overlay: . I rotated it 90 degrees to get the undulations going across the shot and manipulated it to fit the main frame, applied the transformation, and put the layer into difference. I erased pretty much all of transformation at the bottom, because I thought it looked ugly. I made a new layer and did some judicious "painting" to get rid of some of the offending transformation. Then I flattened the image.

Hope you don't mind my crashing the party. 8)

Hi Germaine,

I hope my post (in the blending modes thread) helps you understand the difference blending mode a bit better. You've done a great job with this image, and I think the texture you chose to blend on top of the sunset is perfect.

Thanks for going into so much detail. It's nice to read not only how an artist achieved the look they were trying to convey, but why they did so.

Edit: sunset, not subset.

Almost like a different way of seeing, like Van Gogh seeing.

I just love the movement in the sky created with the overlay! Almost like flames leaping up from the setting sun... cool!

Kind of like a psychadelic aurora.
