Challenge: Orange (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: California Poppy Reserve
Date: Mar 20, 2004
Aperture: F/4

Shutter: 1/320 sec.
Galleries: Nature, Floral
Date Uploaded: Mar 21, 2004

Used a little tripod and a lot of searching for poppies.

Adjust brightness down, contrast up. Crop, resize for web.

If this challenge had been two weeks or more later this would have had a lot more poppies in it.

I agree about the poppy on the left. It draws your eye away from the big, open one. I really love the focus and detail of it, though.. and I do like it off centered with the background so scraggly and blurred. I almost bought something like this at the poppy festival (a print somewhat like this!)

Just looking through some of your work, trying to learn a thing or two!

Brings back memories of childhood where huge fields of these poppies grew on the slopes of the Franklin Mountains, El Paso, Texas.

Depth of field on the Poppy is very good. I like the way the sunlight illuminates the petals of the flower. Very nice.

Great lighting on the poppy. I think that there is too much background and pulls your eyes away from the focus.

I'd have cropped flower on the left, it being only partially in the frame is very distracting to me.

a tighter crop to focus on the main subject would have improved your photo - nice soft light bring the colours out well

Nice shot, good choice of DOF. Good composition as well, though I would think it would be stronger if the fragment of the flower on the left weren't there.

I would have done some serious cropping here, basically just left the flower - colours are gorgeous though

These poppies have great colour. The partial flower on the left is distracting though. Cropping it out would give the image far more impact.

Pretty light on the large flower. Composition could focus more on the one bloom.

Oh my. Really unique and original. A lot of people did flowers, but this one really stands out. Good luck!
