Greetings from the Critique Club...
Hi Debrown :)
Cardinals are beautiful. These guys visit my back porch regularly and eat all my black oil sunflower seed when the squirrels aren't hogging it. This particular shot feels a little odd to me with the blur. The red also feels a bit too heavily saturated.

Good composition, not-so-good Photoshop blur (plainly visible around the Cardinal and top leaves). Not really enough detail for a magazine cover (though it might have been perfect if you had a longer zoom). Nice choice of subject. |

This is a colorful photo with an interesting subject. To me, it seems the blur has been added in post processing and for some reason, it takes away from the quality of the picture. It looks as if there was a lot of sharpening done around the bird or maybe the mask that was used wasn't feathered enough? I use the eraser tool when doing masks to get more control over the edges. |

Nice subject, interesting foreground... good use of dof. Compositionally quite imaginative. I really don't like your background though which is too similar in colour to your bird. There is too much texture in your background which takes the attention away from the bird. |

needs to be a little sharper. |

too much of a soft focus effect applied, there is a red line around the bird as result (don't forget to feather if you make a selection...) |

Great composition, but the cardinal could be sharper |

I would like this cropped closer. The leaves seem unnaturaly blurry. Like the red/green contrast. |

Wonderful shot, great color and wonderful detail. The red against the dark green foliage really makes your subject stand out. |

Your manipulation of the subject left an outline around it. Don't know why that would happen however. Could be over saturated or something. |

Fits beautifully into your chosen magazine's format. Works very well indeed. Well done. |

I absolutely love this shot. I'm about half way through and this is my favorite so far. I love the colours. My only issue is that I can tell you've cut around the bird in a few places to blurr the background. If not, it looks like your camera may have some strange halo. You may want to try multiple layers - cutting the bird in different ways - and then having each layer have a lower opacity. It takes a bit more time, but you may find it worthwhile. Overall though, i LOVE this shot. I'm giving it a high score. |
