That white perimeter ring is a little annoying, as I'm not completely sure how to prevent it from showing up.

I even feathered the USM around the edge of the moon in hopes that it would fade it into the background but the white still shows up. There was some there (straight out of camera) even before I edited anything.

To answer your question Scott, this was shot in JPG mode as PS Elements cannot read RAW.

Did you shoot in raw or jpg?
If jpg your camera setting could cause the white ring (camera sharpening)
What type of sharpening did you use when editing? and did you change the mode during sharpening.

I find that sharpening the following way helps out moon shots

18/40/0 (darken)
150/.03/0 (darken)
150/.03/0 (darken) 50% Occupancy

After resizing for web
150/.03/0 (darken if necessary if not, normal)

Note: This is in Raw format. If taken in jpg then the sharpening would be less but I would still use the darken mode to drop the bright edges that occur during sharpening.

Nice shot, although bit underexposed for my taste. I think you will minimize the ring if turn down the in-camera sharpening. Sharpening wants to increase contrast at places it determines as object edges. I assume you can adjust that with your DX40.
