I hope this does well (and I hope that this challenge is for real). I hope that the voters are open-minded as to the challenge topic (hard to see how to DNMC any image).
Second of two takes. Needed to readjust angle of flash, and used a bigger balloon with more powder inside. Used a homemade sound trigger (bought a kit online for about $18). Set the camera on the self-timer, with an exposure time of 1 sec, the flash on 1/16 power. got the needle into position, hit the shutter button, turned off the room lights, then waited for the shutter to open. Popped the balloon. Done.
PP - opened RAW in CS3, setting blacks to 0. cloned out the small string holding the balloon from the ceiling. crop. 2 soft light layers, then a hue/sat layer to darken and reduce red in my hand. USM at small radius, resize, save for web. |

| I hope you put that in a proper "sharps" container when you were done with it. BTW what was in that syringe? :) More baby powder on the balloon next time. I like the composition and the way the hand stands out next to the action. Congrats. |
