Greetings from Andi via the (archived request)Critique Club.
First Impression: A fun image and reading your comments it must have been a fun shot to do. I'd have preferred to see more detail in the bubbles, have viewed this image on 3 monitors now and they all lack detail.
Composition: I for one don't mind the tilt of but would have liked to have seen Charlie more central in the frame.
Subject: Great idea and it looks as if Charlie enjoyed doing this as I'm sure his first girlfriend will when you pull out the album lol.
Technical: I've mentioned the missing detail in the bubbles and am guessing whilst it was hot water (hence the redness) this could have been sorted during post processing? Good catchlights always help portraits and these are spot on.
Final thoughts: Overall a very nice image that might have scored higher if Charlie was more central and I also agree with the tighter crop comment. |

I didn't vote on this challenge - but here's a bit of up-front technical critique as you requested in the forums :)
- Composition: The shape looks too 'long' and the face is too small in the center. A squarer frame cropped closer to the face might've worked better. Also, the space at the top and bottom draws my eye to the weird vignetting effect in the corners.
- Colour/Contrast: His face looks too orange. The bubbles appear blown out with no real texture visible. Contrast is a bit high as well, giving his skin a blotchy look.
- Focus: Face is too small in the frame, but it gives the impression his eyes aren't in sharpest focus.
I'm reminded of a shot by Judi, which I'll post here for reference;

I didn't vote on this one, but it would have probably been a 4 or 5 from me. The head could be straight but even with that it would still look freeky. (although I must say Charlie is a cutie :).. ) Way too much negative space for me and it does seem blown out. It takes a while to get that it is bubbles. So I would have really liked this if you had gotten a little more up close and personal with some softer lighting, and maybe a conversion to black and white. jmo |

I voted a 6. But for me I did not feel comfortable with the redishness of the face or the expanse of the foam. I think I might have preferred a slightly desaturated image which was cropped much more closely to the subject's face. Perhaps even in a rich monochrome or duotone. Not that I know anything about nothing, of course. ;-) |
