I can only imagine the pain if the steps were empty. But then what would be the point...

I think I would have been tempted to crop it in a bit more from each side to place the two characters in oppositte corners - but still an interesting picture that asks questions of the viewer. |

I would have cropped that line at the top and bottom off and tried for more detail in the figures. |
