Challenge: Free Study 2008-04 (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED
Location: Canmore, Alberta
Date: Apr 17, 2008
Aperture: f/9
ISO: 100
Shutter: 0.6 s
Galleries: Landscape, Portraiture
Date Uploaded: Apr 30, 2008

Taken at 6:30 am in Canmore, Alberta. Sheldon and I left Calgary at 3:30 am to get here and set up in time. As one would expect, it is extremely difficult to find a location to set up when it's pitch black.

When we finally did get set up, there was a bit of a wait until the sun started to come up (good thing for Tim Hortons!). The shot was taken at 28 mm, 0.6 s to pull in some ambient light in the background, and f/9 to get everything in focus. There's a flash at camera left at 1/4 power to light (and freeze) the subject.

I'd like it if this was finally an image DPC voters were looking for, but I still don't think it is. I'll predict around 5.7, all while hoping it gets 6.5.

Post-processing:

- B&W adjustment layer
- Duplicate of original layer on top in screen blending mode at 64% opacity
- Curves on the sky in multiply blending mode for contrast
- High-radius sharpening for contrast
- Crop
- Vignette

Outtake that I would have submitted, but portraits of my wife haven't done too well when I've submitted them in the past:

Underrated IMO. Technically perfect and a fine portrait. I had you in my top group.

I really like the composition of this shot, makes it much more interesting than just the mountains ... the lighting on the person is fantastic and really makes him stand out but IMHO the background is too dark and loses the detail, maybe hdr would have helped

The use of the flash really made this a dramatic shot.

Stunning mountains. I like the lighting on his jeans, but the background looks a bit dark on my monitor.

yes this is a shot that is helped by the title. otherwise it would just have been a man on a rock. the stone washed colours of the jeans and mountains are compatible and work well.

Not sure how I feel about this. The PP on him makes it look almost like a painting. (photomatix, or similar?) The mountains in the background are great, but the buildings distract from the scene.
