I have been trying for years to get a decent shot of a Julia. I don't much like the background, but I am delighted to have captured the butterfly. I may blur the background severely to remove all that distraction.

PP:
Sharpened
Cloned with low opacity to lighten the dark leaf in the back.
Painted with low opacity to darken the light leaf in the lower left.
USM with 50% opacity for contrast.
Neat imaage.
Reduced the effect of all the above on the butterfly by placing a masked copy of the original layer at the top of the stack with about 25% opacity.

Stunning. Very much like Julia's position on the shiny leaf.

brilliant colors, lovely background - rich and interesting but not overwhelming - great job on getting this so sharp

i think the processing really helps this, from what i guess the original probably looked like after reading the description. the green and orange make for great opposing colors.

It sounds from your description that you made quite an improvement in the original image with the processing. I agree that the BG is quite busy. The bright contrasting color of the critter makes it stand out nicely though, and the centered composition helps keep attention focused on the butterfly.
Thanks for posting. Now I know what a Julia butterfly looks like, and will be looking for them on my outings to the swamps.
