I asked him his name but, got no response. Every weekend by the St. Eleftherios train station a flea market materialises. The Roma, or Gypsies if you will, use the hoods of cars and the pavement as their stands. You can find anything from vegetables, to socks, braziers and broken LEGO sets. You can pick shoes from large stacked piles, so long as you find both pieces of a pair and do not mind their being second hand.

Children take care of the babies while their parents haggle. The toddlers and those a bit older are left to their own devices and generally are either sleeping by the 'stands' or are playing with what is up for sale until they tire of it or it is sold.

Took a quick photo after buying a pair of socks with the word Puma and what vaguely resembled a four-legged animal sewn on them. This purchase allowed me a quick snap and I moved along as photo taking is regarded suspiciously...

"Hey, kid, where did you get all these clothes?"
"Five dollar! Everything five dollar!"
"This shirt says 'Marco' on it. Who's Marco?"
"Five dollar, it's yours not Marco. Five dollar!"
"Where are your parents?"
The kid hissed. His parents needed five dollars, not questions. They were so close to having train fare for the three of them, but all of the decent clothes had been sold, and he couldn't "find" any more until it was dark.
"Can you sing?" asked an old white lady.
"Five dollar!"

She handed him the money. "Do you know any Italian songs?"

He was so happy that he was already singing.

I was born in Dixie in a boomer shed
Just a little shanty by the railroad track
Freight train was it taught me how to cry
The holler of the driver was my lullaby
I got the freight train blues
Oh Lord mama, I got them in the bottom of my rambling shoes
And when the whistle blows I gotta go baby, don't you know
Well, it looks like I'm never gonna lose the freight train blues.

Nice candid. Dramatic and edgy. I like the BW.
