 I certainly didn't need a 300mm lens for this shot... this hawk had just finished a large meal in my yard, and couldn't fly for over an hour. I sat patiently so he could become accustomed to my presence and shot away.

These birds are normally pretty skittish. You were very fortunate to be there, and ready when this happened. This shot has excellent detail and color.
