Camera: Canon EOS-1D Mark II
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
Location: Hart Pony Baseball & Softball League
Date: May 10, 2008
Aperture: 2.8

Rigged my camera onto a C-stand, off set the arm, used a cartellini clamp holding onto a bogun super clamp.

Safetied the camera with #8 white sash rope to the fence.

Used ratchet straps top and bottom of stand attached to the fence to keep stand secure.

Counter weighted the C-stand arm with a sand bag because the weight of the camera and cables made the arm sag.

Plugged in my AC adapter into my camera body so batteries were never an issue.

Got my angle, got my focus, gaffer taped the focus in place for insurance, switch from AF to MF.

Used a remote switch above home plate, behind the back stop, off the first base foul line side.

RAW=Levels, WB, Crop

PS=Level, curve, highlight & shadow, Dodge and burn, convert, USM, Half USM, USM contrast, reduce,

I thought this was an excellent shot. I loved the angle and the action captured. I appreciate that you included your set-up info. I will probably not be setting up cameras in this fashion but it helps give me ideas so I can shoot my own kids as baseball season approaches. Amazing photo.

Thanks for the kind words.

in my opinion you were robbed...this is amazing work, perfectly fits challenge, the use of ABC is unbelievable, and the angle / perspective / shot in general is just faultless.

10 from me, and definitely should have been the blue :D
05/19/2008 06:01:32 AM
I actually cannot believe this did not ribbon, and more importantly, did not get the blue. This is fabulously captured, it hits the title on the head, and the set up/ delivery is fabulous. Great work!

This is such an ideal story-telling shot that I would almost swear you had it set up and posed. If so, both those models deserve academy awards. Nice job.

Perfect timing and flawlessly captured. Such a victorious moment! I can literally hear the cheering of the crowd as I view this image.

This has been my favorite since I first perused through the thumbnails. The facial expressions are awesome, the focus is perfect, there's just nothing I don't like about it. And you couldn't have had a title fall in your lap easier than this one! :-) Hope to see this on the front page!
05/16/2008 08:14:39 AM

Wonderful moment captured!

WOW the expressions are priceless... the textures are -beautiful (detail/focus/balance of white and dark in your B&W are great) and it made me laugh because you actually have he A & C in the image with the ball out of reach of the catcher and the foot almost on home plate... but I wonder did they actually win or not now.... ;) = high score, the knee in the dirt and everything is just -sooo well framed captured! i look forward to seeing who this is by...
05/12/2008 10:24:11 PM
Wild photo. I can not decide whether I like the action (pose) or not. The facial expressions just put me off for some reason.
05/12/2008 10:20:11 PM
Really great sports capture. One my favorites by far! Good choice to use black & white for this shot.
05/12/2008 07:21:33 PM
Is this Hart in Santa Clarita? Nice moment you captured there!
05/12/2008 02:06:25 PM
Go Astros!
05/12/2008 12:22:28 PM
Great action shot and great title. I checked the Jerseys to make sure the names were right ;)
05/12/2008 10:03:12 AM
Well, technically they aren't yet "beat" because he's yet to touch the plate. They are about to be beat, but with two inches to go anything could happen. He could lift his foot, miss the plate, pitcher or catcher could recover ball and tag him out. But I doubt the umpires at this level would catch that. So the win is imminent. But I digress. Nice shot. And Astros has no apostrophe. :)

Great photographic 'catch'... typo in the title though... I hope your team won! The ball there just makes this shot!
