Yes, the couple would have noticed. And there wasn't nearly enough time to do that much damage. That's why we finally chose do to a slightly different scene. And yes, I agree, the hammer should have been bigger. Check out the description and comments for the challenge entry.

Of the outtakes this is my favorite. I don't care for the couple walking away from the car. If she's been pounding away to create this much damage they probably would have noticed. Maybe she should've had a gas can and pouring the "gas" all over the hood. The hammer should've been much bigger.
