Yes yes yes I know that the oversized border is not good, but I was stuck between a rock and a hard place with this shot.
I had tried my hand at motion panning with Daisy on her bike and whilst the outcome was OK (well acually pretty damn good for me) I get the feeling that there will be many similar photos (subject wise) in the challenge that will be executed better.
Then I noticed the shadow of Daisy and fell in love with the image
The problem was after cropping and resizing I was left with something that was 621 pixels by 189 pixels. I sort advice from a couple of DPCers (thanks bassbone and cfarrell) and whilst they said they liked the shot they thought the crop would kill it in scoring.
The trouble was I just could not let it go, I wanted to post this shot. I then came up with the idea of giving it a more traditional shape by adding a huge border across two edges.
To be honest I know it is going to bomb (I have been given a projected score of 4 - 4.5) but in a way that eases the pain as it is only when I think images will do well and they flop that I get fed up.
I guess while I expect a low score, I am hoping that maybe one person will see the shot and think - like I do - "cooooooool"
I promise no whinging in the score thread this week |

I'm so sorry for the DQ, Jon. This is a cool photo - very creative and out of the box. Too bad for the technical nit-pick - I hope you're not discouraged and will shoot on!

Well, DARN for the DQ! I really love it. And the big white border serves almost as part of the photo and enhances it beautifully. I hate DQ's. Sometimes, I think it would be so cool if we could just submit our photos and not even have to answer to anyone about how we got the shot. That's how it is on other sites and I think it would actually work -- because generally the general public kills photos that cross the line anyway.
Sigh. I think this is an awesome photo. Much more interesting than a straight up shot of a bicycle, right? ! |

Sorry this was DQed. It is very creative, and pleasing to look at. This would be cool as a large print. Maybe you should put it up for sale on DPCPrints. |

The white streaks are pretty cool. Makes it look like the shadow is traveling down an orange bike path. Sorry to see you got a DQ! |

interesting shot. personally the white on the top and on the bottom are a little distracting. although i do enjoy the capturing of motion on the dirt. |
