Thanks for the comments. This effect was achieved in Photoshop using gradient masks and the Lens Blur filter. These are full-sized boats.
The actual photo was taken on the Amstel river in Amsterdam, and yes, those are lock in the background. |

Obviously I don't know what's outside the from on the right, but I'd like to see that boat on the rght have some space in frot of it. |
