Well, here is my first entry into this or any side challenge. You can probably expect to see more than a few of the black band borders from me. Not exactly original to me, and as much as I have been trying to get away from using them, I seem to have a growing obsession with them. At least I think I know where my fascination with them comes from.

I am not a TV junkie nor do I hate them, but there is something that seems cool to me about watching a well filmed movie on TV. I'm not talking about those ones that create it with all the unique camera movements and such, but more the ones where you could sit and study a single frame of the movie for hours, even obsess over it a little.

So anyways, back to my point...the black bands. Movies are in 16x9 format and old school TVs are 3x4. Anyways, that causes the black bands... yes, I know kind of stupid for me think that is very cool. But, oh well, I'm not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed anyhow! ;)

I really like the overall darkness of this, as well as the soft background beautifully contrasted with the sharp subject.

Very cool. The thumbnail didn't give much ideal about how interesting this shot is. Interesting "letter box" version.

Great composition. I especially like the stark contrast between the colors of the shifter and the rest of the interior. Definitely a good use of focal point. I would really like the bokeh but the background light sources are slightly distracting to me, mostly because they are comparable in size to the focal point. That being said, I still think it's a very neat shot. Love the lighting for sure. Gotta ask though... what model of car is that? I can't see the steering wheel marque clear enough to tell!

Great shot and cropping. Love the richness to it and the black border.

Awesome beginning to the month. Love the dark, deeply saturated vintage dash in the foreground -- especially Skully -- and the colorful bokah in the back. What car is this?

Before I even read your comments, The first thing I thought of was that I was looking at a movie scene! Love it!

I agree with others, this feels like a scene out of a movie. Your fascination aside, a perfect choice of border for this photo. I wasn't sure about this photo when I opened it earlier today. Now I really like it. I feel as though I'm anticipating the next scene...

Marvelous! I really like this. I've been looking at it for five minutes. The light falls so well in all the right places. Rich, vibrant delicious color. Great comp. And I'm a big fan of the black bands, so throw them in all you want.

Great shot. Love the bokeh and the colors. Know what you mean about the black bands. I'm a huge movie fan and the black bands are always a sort of subliminal queue for me that I'm looking at something "more" than just a tv show. The white lines do throw the effect off a bit here, but I actually think they work for the shot.

I LOVE THIS! Everything about it is just uber-cool, aside from the fact that I'm a huge skull fan. The perspective and the colors in the background, the bit of bokeh and the skull (gear shift knob?? I want one!!!) very avantgard - especially with the border. I went through a big border phase myself. This totally works here.

I think this is a very cool image, like something you would see in a movie. No, the black borders don't make me think that. I like black borders on some images, usually images where they really stand out. They get sort of lost here, probably because of the darkness of the image on the bottom. But, back to the photo. That green skull really stands out and is sort of creepy but without it the photo would not have as much impact as it does.

Heh Mark. Nice to see you around. Love that funky skull - and I do like that border as well. Great bokeh.

mad_brewer...

Thanks for the correct numbers...I knew as soon as I typed that I was going to get something wrong. I really should have done a little homework first.

icu1965...

I agree with you on the thin white lines, but the dark bottom of the pic was blending a little too much, so I added them to get a little seperation.

I was actually thinking album cover more than movie scene, but it's a cool shot anyway. 16:9 was compromise between 4:3 (tv) and 1.85 & 2.35 (film). So all movies @ 1.85 are cropped a tad for 16:9 TVs and 2.35 movies will have the black bands on a 16:9 TV.

Very cool. I hope we get to see more of this vehicle! I like the addition of the black band, but the little white lines kind of threw me off of your idea.

I definately had the thought that this looks like a movie scene when I first saw the image. Very striking color & bokeh & nice sharp subject. The way you've composed this is very fun to look around.
