Have to be honest, I messed around with this so much I don't remember all of the steps. Obviously multiple levels adjustments, tons of dodge and burn, lots of sharpening, crop, resize, save for web.

Ta da!

I think I like the original image better than the crop but like the black and white in the final better than the original. . . long story short answer: try doing the same effect on the entire image without the crop. IMHO

I like the B&W conversion. When you increased the contrast, you lost a lot of details on the end of the bench though. I adore the lines that the bench make with the wall and the shadows of the end piece on the concrete underneath the bench :)

I like what you've done, it's a vast improvement over the original. I like the detail you've brougt into the wood, and the brick on the right side. The shadows may be a little too dark, you've lost a lot of detail in the dark areas.

love your process on this jake .. excellent crop . you've lifted a nice photograph into a different place .. a very very good place ... !!..:)
i wish i could help you re your question about learning photoshop .. but i've pretty much learnt my way much as you have .. fumbling along and occasionally picking up a hint here and there .. i'm sure i could've learnt a lot faster if i had an instruction book, but i'm more a hands on, doing it, sort'v person and i find reading that stuff a pain .. must be the left or right brain thing .. i'm sure i've seen a book called 'photoshop for dummies' .. !! .. dont be offended i have a book called 'philosophy for dummies' .. lol ..
i havent read a lot of it yet .. !!
i'm sure you'll be inundated with helpful ideas for increasing your knowledge tho .. that's the beauty of dpc .. so many great ppl willing to help .. :)

Wow. I like this. Nice leading lines and a good range of blacks and grays. You might want to lighten up the lower and upper left corner enough to bring back in some detail.
