A female gohper turtle. They are a valuable asset to the local natural faunta because they make burrows in the ground, and their burrows are home to several other types of small animals. They are on the "threatened" list.
The early native people, and the pioneers in this area used to eat them to supplement their diet. They are relatively rare today. I see one once in a while but not as often as I did 40 years ago.
Zoom at 220mm, no filter.

I like the closeup of her face. Thanks for the info about her. I don't think we have those kind of turtles up here.

I've never seen a gopher tortoise, but I've read about them, and how they get buried by the developers. There is a sanctuary in Boynton Beach where they can be relocated from building sites.

Looks like a link to the past, a Florida ancient. I wonder how old this turtle is, nice capture with good detail.

Awesome detail! Turtles are such interesting creatures to study...so much character to them.

Good shot! The detail on the head is great. Maybe a little darkening of the background would help it be even stronger.

I love the look of ancient wisdom in her eye. She has a quiet dignity about her in this shot that's lovely to me.

There is something so fascinating and ancient about these creatures - the world has moved on around them, and still they plod on at their own measured pace. They are quite marvellous.
