In four years of observing wildlife in South Florida, I have only seen a Yellow-crowned Night-heron three times. The first time I didn't have a camera with me. The second time I went looking for one of these in a place where I heard it had been seen. That time I got a picture, but the bird was partly behind a mangrove.

So I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this bird strolling on the beach today. It was there for at least an hour. It was chased away by a little boy, and it returned shortly after the boy moved on. It allowed me to approach to about 15 feet.

Herons are great birds. I like how he looks like he's strutting. The colour is nice and the water makes a great background.

This is great. I like how you captured it mid-stride with the one foot not quite down and reflected in the water layer over the sand. I also like your border choice for this shot.

What a delightful shot. The waves form a lovely gentle diagonal across the picture cutting it into two portions - land and water - then along comes this elegant wader who both literally and metaphorically strides between the two sections.

Lovely lighting and colours with a nice crisp focus.

ps is it just me or does the eye look much to big for it's head ? Maybe that's because (as it's name suggests) it's a night bird and so needs to capture all the light that it can.

What a beautiful shot, I'm glad you finally managed to capture this bird! I'm going to say though, I'm not sure if I like the border =(

Gorgeous bird, and congrats on finally capturing a rare subject and doing it justice. Bet you were over the moon when you got home and brought this up and were sure the shot was as good as it looked on the camera's preview screen :-)

Nice find Julie!
The light and the reflection in the water is excellent. You were not only fortunate, but prepared this time.
