 Ferris Wheel, Navy Pier, Chicago

The Navy Pier was a real pier used for shipping and entertainment up to the 1960s. It juts out into Lake Michigan and fell into disrepair in the 70s and the 80s. In the 90s, it was converted into a shopping/entertainment/exhibition/recreation complex. It is now a major tourist destination, attracting about 8 million visitors annually.

This 150 foot Ferris Wheel is the Navy Pier's most visible attraction. That's equivalent to a three-storey building. It is a model of the first Ferris wheel which was exhibited in the World Colombian Exposition of 1893. This present wheel has 40 gondolas seating six passengers each. Its 40 spokes spanning about 140 feet in diameter are illuminated by thousands of sparkling lights during the evening.

When you're on the top of the wheel, your view of Chicago's skyline and lakefront is just breathtaking.


Tech: The Ferris wheel was shot with the D70's night setting, the picture was then subjected to cropping, resizing, autolevels and unsharp mask.

Not sure about the title - the image doesn't really convey any sort of movement. But i like the photo - nice and sharp, and the colours against the dark sky are very striking. Interesting crop too.

I'm guessing ferris wheel on this, can't tell clearly. If you were doing motion, give it a slightly longer exposure, as the only things seeming to move (barely) are the lights, which detracts from the photo.
