Maybe I got lucky. Practiced shooting the nest on my back, and later in the day heard the feeding chirps and rushed over and sighted through my tiny EVF. A bit more processing tweaks, though very basic. (One less megapixel than other panny, but the focus here is much better; I suspect the quality is better, but I haven't conclusive evidence).

Your encouraging remarks on my first attempt seem to have paid off. Muchas gracias.

Thanks Mary and MM. Today I set up the tripod with the FZ5, nicely aimed, and went about garden tasks. Just before a late lunch I heard The Sound, dashed over and managed one fair shot I think of Juvenile actually being fed, beak in beak. Will try to post somewhere if it works. (Really want to compare it with the first shot and the 2nd [Fz10]).

Looks like junior is getting more impatient by the day :-) Much clearer shot (I even see a catchlight in mama's eye); I'm really glad you went back and got this.

This is a very clear shot for that range with a P&S. Your reshoot paid off in this shot. It looks like the fledgling is about ready to begin flying with it's parents to learn how to be an adult.
We have a pair of smaller woodpeckers that nest in the same tree in our yard every season. Limbs and leaves on the tree block having a clear view to the entrance to the nest though.
