The usual dramatic small DOF of a 50mm @ F1.8 is mostly seen with portraits shot from a relative close range. The focus point here is considerably further away. |
True, take a look at this page...
The online dof calculator: //dfleming.ameranet.com/dofjs.html
For example, if you have the lens set at 28mm, f/1.8 and you focus on a spot 20meters away then you get sharp image between 10.5-216.9 meters.
Just check out the online dof calculator. It´s a cool tool! |

Thank you very much for your comments and your votes. This is a very lucky shot for me. I am not much of a landscape but rather more of a portrait person.
The first night of our package tour to Vietnam was in Halong Bay area. I woke up at 5:00 a.m. and was out in the shores overlooking the Halong Bay at 6:00 a.m. (since breakfast won't be ready until 7:00). I spotted 3 fishing boats. I took plenty of shots (close to 50). I was also using my newly purchased 50 mm. f1.8 lens (per suggestion of dpchallenge members). In the LCD, I wasn't impressed with my shots. I would rather save my children pics so I deleted a lot. But when I downloaded the un-deleted ones in my computer, I was surprised by the clarity of the details and the drama of the early morning mist.
Darcy, I check the exif file again and it was f1.8. Sorry I am not a very technical person so I couldn't answer the question. maybe somemmembers can answer this.
Once again, thank you very much for all the critiques.

Beautiful tone. I really like the composition, having two of them in the frame and including the mountains in the background. Nice foggy atmosphere, really adds a mood to the photo. The rippled reflections are great. It looks like it was taken in Asia, is this librodo?
Well done, good luck... |

I hope you get a ribbon with this fantastic shot. I like your placement and the open space to the left definately gives me the feeling of distination. But, it might be a lttle over done. My eye gets kind of distracted by perhaps too much space. Great image. Good luck! 9 |

Exceptional B&W image. Nice greyscales, lighting and composition. There is a touch of haloing along the sharp edges of the boats but no other digital artifacts. The fog and calmness of the water gives this a haunting richness deserving of a ribbon in this challenge. |

Beautiful choice of subject matter and the morning mist just compliments it perfectly. Composition doesn't work so well for me - because the two boats are not symmetrical anyway I think it would be better to have them as a whole centred within the watery background. Alternatively the extra space would work better for me above and to the right of the boats - perhaps because of the direction of the body of that man with his pole? Still one of my favourites in this challenge. |
