Totally covered a glass table and old Minolta lens in baby powder. Lens was sitting on a glass table through which a flashlight was shining. Front of lens was further lit by another flashlight I was holding above (diffused through tracing paper). With the other hand, I held the baby powder that I blew across the light beam.

In post:
Shifted WB towards blue because proper WB is boring
Smart Sharpen
Dodged area with lettering
Cloned out some blue fringe

I had another version of this shot which combined exposures to get a reflection of the lens below, but I decided I didn't want to toe the rule-breaking line.

POST-CHALLENGE:
WOOOOOOOO!!! First ribbon, and I couldn't be more excited. Thanks so much, you guys. I was worried this would be construed as a bit of a shoehorn, but I'm glad you disagreed! And this was my last entry before I got my D300, so a fitting send-off to the old EVOLT.

Outtake time:

#1: This was my first idea, Fibonacci's numbers with card houses. Simply couldn't get the lighting right (and I couldn't get it on plain enough of a background). Glad I reconsidered, though.

#2: This is the illegal edit I mentioned earlier, and I actually don't like it as much as the legal one, thankfully.

#3: This was quite the difficult choice. I still kind of like this one better, I like that the light cuts off after the focus, looks kinda like fire. And the glass it's on looks cooler, too. But my girlfriend thought one with the full lines looked more "mathematics"-y. And as I said, I was worried this was a shoehorn as it was.

I think you chose the best one for your entry, #3 has shows the grains of powder and that detracts from the image in my opinion. Your entry was outstanding and very creative! Great work and Congrats on your ribbon!

Great shot! Nicely done on the ribbon! The baby powder is an excelent idea. I prefer the award winning shot as the light in #3 doesnt lead anywhere, it just kind of sits in space. Nice work.

Wondrous picture. It imerses in a deep sense of abstract, besides of a tangible loved thing (the lens). I was very impressed.
