This shot took me two days to get right. I had gotten the flower from my colleague Diana because she was so pleased with the photo's I took of her and her friend. Purple is my favorite color, and as soon as this challenge came up I knew I wanted to do something with that one strange looking flower in the bouquet. I wanted to make it more dynamic than just a still of a flower and I wanted to try my hand at an IreneMphoto. But then the idea started developing in my head and I decided on bubbles instead of water droplets.
This was a very hard photo to do. You can't direct the bubbles exactly where you want them, and when they do get where you want them they pop! It took about 250 shots and a good 4 hours in total. On top of that you get these reflections in the bubbles (do you like my studio? ;- ) )
So timing, directing and lighting were a challenge in itself. That's why I like DPC so much, I've learned a lot just from this shoot.

I'm really hoping for a 6+ but you never know :-)

I think that without the reflection this may have done better. Also, you're trying to get us to look at several things here and that's confusing to many. Bubbles, reflections on bubbles, reflection on table, the flower, the fact the pricks look like they're poking the bubbles, all this makes for a very busy shot and lots of people just want to view the next shot when they're being hit with too much info. Look at any great shot, whether it be macro, landscape, studio still or even a portrait, they are all simple and the points that make the image great are clear and precise and few, contrary to your image here.

I think in the five seconds (being generous here for many voters) that people view images during voting, they didn't see the multiple layers of coolness presented here. I think your scores suffered because too much was going on - you have a cool plant, some cool bubbles, the cool plant poking a cool bubble, a set of reflections, etc. The problem with the shot for DPC is that too much is going on. You commented that you wanted to create an IreneM type shot...I think you did a nice job of a still life with good lighting, but the thing that really separates Irene's shots are the simplicity of the image. Focusing on the bubble or the plant alone, or focusing on the interaction of the plant with the bubble as a close up macro type shot would may have come across more DPC friendly.

srry ppl didn't understand this ... first time i saw this , i went like "aint bubble too fragile to be placed near pricks " . i think the lighting didn't do its bit in bringing out the fragility. nonetheless this deserved 6+

Nice light, nice subjects, great concept. Composition doesn't need the reflection.

What a fascinating answer to this challenge. Very "out-of-the-box" thinking going on here. I love the use of the black BG with the subjects.

I love this shot!! Such contradiction in the items but yet they are so beautiful together for this challenge.
