I sat down to photograph 'safety matches' for the safety challenge, but the pyromanic in me just couldn't resist lighting them. Now, I suppose I could title it, "Safety Matches" and shoehorn it in, but I just wouldn't feel good about it. Darn it, the risk challenge has more than twice the number of entries!
I'm proud of the lighting on this one. Still using only my one SB-600, but after getting into Strobist, I'm wanting another one, or six.
Used a black clipboard at the back of my home-made light tent but the flash was shining off it. Then, thanks to Strobist I remembered barn doors, so I used a plate to block the flash hitting the background, and voila!
PP was just convert from raw, hue/saturation adjustment, cloned out some hot pixels, USM and save for web. I'm really proud of this image, straight out of the camera.
Hoping for a 6+, but maybe I'm kidding myself. Fingers crossed!
*Edit* After looking at the original closely, I think that the hot pixels aren't hot pixels at all, but maybe phosphorous?, so I've resubmitted without the spot editing. |

This is very cool. I have to try this some day. The flame looks so fluid great choice of shutter speed, and great colors as well. I think the score doesnt indicate the true value and technicals needed to make this photo. But who can tell about the DPC voters huh. |

Wow! Is this a high speed shot or a compound picture? |

I think even with basic editing you would have been allowed to clone out those annoying bright spots. The lighting is a little harsh but the flame looks really cool and your message fits the challenge very well. |
