This poor guy was dead as a doornail, yet somehow he still clung on.

Took this today, deadline day, after a week of having no ideas at all. I decided there would probably be lots of upside down butterflies, so why not join the masses; I trekked to Butterfly and Insect World and spent a coupla hours with the butterflies. Very relaxing and got some pretty cool shots, this being one of the better ones. I didn't even realise it was dead until after a few shots, when I noticed it wasn't moving at all and it's pretty speckled wings were in a right state. (They were heavily speckled, that wasn't a result of oversharpening.)

Editing: Minimal. Crop, resize, brightness/contrast tweaking using levels and sharpen.

I gave your image a 5. The image struck me as being very busy, the background is a little too bright relative to the butterfly and though it probably has very sharp focus on the eye, the large f stop gave you a shallow depth of field that caused you to loose focus on the wings and the body. And, the wings appear a bit washed out....I would too if I were dead

This didn't come up for me in voting. I like it. Good use of DOF (which is harder to achieve on a small sensor camera), good color and detail, and a very good twist on a common subject. Love the title, btw. My nitpick on this one is that I may have not cropped it so centered. I'm surprised at the low 5 it averaged, but this was a low averaging challenge for some reason. If it had come up in voting, I think I would have given it a 6. If you'd cropped it differently and maybe been able to coax more detail out of the wings, I might call it a 7.

Go LadyT :)

Dramatic shot with loads of detail, I still think the other one was a better scoring shot but this one was much more unique and dramatic so I respect your choice :)

Nice and sharp on the butterfly eye.. .but the backlighting being so bright has a negative effect. I wonder if you played with this in Photoshop or something a bit, it could have score more highly...
