Taken 7 hours too early for the Wildlife challenge, dammit!
I had a great couple days of shooting. We'd had rotten weather so when the sun was shining I grabbed a couple buckets of flatted barley and headed to the beach. I scattered a bunch then just sat on the ground at the water's edge and let the birds come to me. I was literally surrounded by Canada geese, even able to touch some (though they weren't crazy about that). There were 17 mute swans and 1 trumpeter swan, and one even came up and helped himself out of the bucket by my feet while I was lying down facing the geese behind me. Mixed in were a large flock of mallards, widgeons and pintails, though they stayed in the water.
I took a couple hundred shots on Tuesday, just for me, then at rollover that night what comes up but "Wildlife"! grrrr.... Luckily Wednesday was sunny as well, so back I went. Before I knew it 2 hours was gone and I had 600 shots. It's just so awesome sitting at chest-level to a wild swan who's only 3 feet away. You really realise then just how BIG they are! At first they're cautious, but after a while they seem to forget I'm there and just go about their business, grooming, doing mating displays, bickering, even sleeping. I really feel priviledged to be in the midst of that. |
