Challenge: Rusted (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Canon EOS-D60
Location: Georgia
Date: May 1, 2004
Aperture: 22
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/45
Galleries: Landscape, Rural
Date Uploaded: May 1, 2004

This old spring house, in rural northern Georgia, is at least 80 years old according to people who have lived in the area for many years. Other than cropping the picture, I had to adjust the contrast since this was taken on a heavily overcast afternoon. Also added a little unsharp mask.

You might wonder why I included the tree so prominently in the foreground. I think it helps add some depth in this particular case, but its main purpose was to obscure a visually distracting path that runs just to the left of this building. With only basic editing allowed (no cloning), I had to get creative to exclude the path from the shot.

Great composition! This makes me wonder what it would have looked like if the depth of field emphasized the house more than the foreground tree bark. Overall, a very enjoyable image.

Good shot. I like the colors. I like the use of the tree in the shot but I think that it occupies a bit too much of the frame. Maybe if it was about 1/3 less of the tree.

A very nice fresh shot - I would maybe crop off some of the tree on the left as it seems to command too much attention and take away from the subject.

Beautiful lush colors and textures - very nice composition and framing. I love this photo - it's evocative of a wonderfully tranquil place where I'd be happy to sit around and watch the roof rust.

The greens are a little on the idyllic side, but the colors of the barks, rust, and water ring true. I guess just idyllic conditions of light and time of year. The framing on the right hand side is obviously difficult. From what I can see moving the side in to the left might work. I think I would love to play this course. It should appeal to almost any golfer or lover of fairy tales. You get a 9 from me.

Interesting composition. Was going to complain about the rust not being dominant enough, but then I realize this was just plain nice to rest the eye upon after voting on some 300+ red images. And the object was to compose around rust, not shoot rust. Is it a golf course by chance? The grass behind the house seems golfy..

However - must complain about something right? The focus is a bit off. Shorter DOF and the focus dead on the rusty house would have made this really good. Perhaps just a little less tree to the left too I think. Anyway, nice warm image. Good luck!

Rewrite: After revisiting DOF looks good, image just appears to be in soft focus. Very nice overall.

Excellent composition. The green colors really make the building stand out. I've looked at about 25 so far - and this is #1 for now (but with 447 entries....) ADDED 5-5-2004 "I've now rated all the images and this is still way better than most!"

Wow! I don't want to swell your noggin, but wow! This shot jumped out at me even from the thumbnail. Very captivating. I love how you took this from behind the tree. It gives the feel of peeking in on the scene. The colors, the water, refllection, rolling green hills, and then the little house. I love it. this has to do well in the challenge. very inspiring to me. - solid 10. thank-you

Beautiful picture, but the house should have been in focus instead of the tree. 8

The green is a bit oversaturated. Note that ther is very little difference between the color of the pond water and the vines in the foreground. It kind of hurts my eyes. I'd expect the water to look a bit more brownish than this. But I like the composition and the tranquil mood. I'd like to be here.

Nice photo. The building seems a little blurry, but then again the challenge calls to compose an interesting shot around it so this is right on in my opinion.

Neat find and the composition okay. The dof is a little shallow. I think the roof should of been crisp since its the main subject. Nice color range.

In my opinion the subject should be more shone! The tree is the first thing you notice, but nice picture. could a rated more if it where closer!
