There were 667 men and 50 women inmates the day I visited this third world prison. It was my second visit. This lady was in cell given the responsibility of cooking for the other inmates from what I could see.
The sad thing about this place is: often husbands and their wives end up in prison awaiting trials, sometimes waiting 3 years. Many traffic drugs, not by choice but desperation to feed their families. Most come from the slums I have visited. Once both parents are in prison, their many children have to fend for themselves unless an aunty or grandmother can help. Often there is no help and the kids end up on the streets, begging, in crime, prostitution, living on the streets.
It was a real eye opener, but there is hope. We are doing our bit working with local churches and even the mayor to bring change, one life at a time. I have never felt more alive in ministry than the week I was there.
THOUGHTS ON THE IMAGE: I realise now there was too much noise reduction. I edited this on my Tablet PC and you just couldn't see how heavy handed it was. I guess it's one of the problems of traveling and editing on a 12 inch screen.

its a very poignant image none the less ..
it must be very difficult processing on a less than perfect computer/monitor etc ..
i did it once when we were in queensland at the beginning of this year and i used the laptop .. for starters i hadnt had any sleep and then i picked an image that i wouldnt have chosen to process in my wildest dreams on my home computer .. probably holiday madness .. !! .. anyhoooooo .. unfortunately i'd done a self dq a couple of challenges before it and couldnt take it out .. at least you got a much better score than i got on this .. embarrassing really ..
anyhoooo ... i've read your comments about the situation for this woman .. constantly when i visit your portfolio i am brought up short .. reminded of the good things in my life and the squalor that some ppl face .. its a nearly prehistoric attitude i reckon jailing ppl who have no other choice .. and their children, without the help of ppl like you, are only going to continue the cycle ..
i cant imagine how this woman would feel if a child of hers was out there alone .. :)

amazing image Enzo
having been to the Philippines as well its sad to see just how impoverish the place is in some areas
we spent a week on Boracay Island and although the place is so beautiful you have to feel for the staff in the resorts many on B.I go mths away from family to earn what little they are paid i still found them to be the most friendliest people along with the Solomon Islanders who were amazing as well

a little too much noise reduction, I think. I would have liked to see more grittiness or noise. would have fit the image better. |

This makes me want to know what she's in for. Nice focus on her face. Good color choice. |

An interesting shot. There's a story here. I'll be looking for your notes after the challenge. Maybe a little heavy on the neatimage. I don't expect a woman in a Philippine prison to look this pleasant and presentable. |

Really? Wow...she seems to be cool and collective about it. How did you manage this shot? I like the way the bars are brought right up to our faces... |

I think you're effective at communicating hope here, despite the title. |

Wow! I'm hoping you have more details behind this story. I'm eager to learn more (which means your photo did a great job of pulling me in). I love the positioning of the bars with your subject. The beautiful and innocent looking subject just doesn't seem to fit in the environment, which is very intriquing. Excellent! 10 |
