I dont know what kind of bird this is

he was hanging out, I pulled up next to him in my car and just clicked a few as the light was so sweet...he finally slid into the lake and floated peacefully off

Interesting looking bird. The lighting is really nice and I like the detail of the feathers.

Excellent shot Anne of this Double Crested Cormornant. The actual crests or plumage on the top of the male's head only become apparent for a short period of time during the breeding season. The redness of the gullet, behind the beak, also intensifies in colour. Nice capture - looks like he was hiding from you.

I agree. The light is really beautiful. In Dutch we call it an "Aalscholver", but there seems to be a lot of species.

I believe this is a cormorant. We had one in our lake earlier this fall (in Minnesota) and I tried to get a few shots, but he was really shy and I couldn't get close enough. The light is really nice, too bad about the rock in the foreground.

Double Crested Cormorant I believe is what he is... I knew I had seen them before was drawing a blank until I saw sulamk's comment. Enature.com seems like a pretty decent site to find critter info on, you can look stuff up by your zip code if you want.
Nice find!!
