Well... this was actually a test shot... I planned on doing a big setup downtown for this one... got all my gear ready, charged my pig power pack up, but we got rained out... I was going to do a big setup downtown on Saturday night... but it rained all night... so it was a bust... luckily I went out with my faince on Friday night to do some test shots, so at least we had some nice ones... I decided to go ahead and enter this one...

[update...]

ok.... now it's Sunday night... the rain stopped but it's just too damn cold and windy... so I re-shot my original rain shot... it's a much better... not my original idea... but still really good...

Now... this is not something I came up with... it has been done before, so I would think that other people would have shots like this... but I'm not sure... it's acutally VERY simple!... just cut out piece of cardboard a tiny bit bigger than the inner dimentions of your lens filter, cut out a heart in the middle, then jam it into the filter, and fire away... the out of focus lights in tbackground get a nice Bokeh in the shape of the cutout... any shape you want =)

BUT the trick is to have a VERY shallow depth of field... this way the lights don't have to be too far away to become blurry... you could do this with a 50mm f/1.8... BUT it works best with a f/1.4 lens... so I used my nikkor 50mm f/1.4D lens for the shot... for lighting I used an SB-600 with a GF lightsphere... I LOVE my lightsphere... EVERYONE should buy one!!!

incase you didn't pick up on it, the hearts are the street lights on the road...

now... how will it do? don't know... some people may not like the half face... I do =)...

Either way... I have a new trick and I will use it again many times... =)

Hmmmmm..... I still can't quite figure out the cardboard setup you're describing. Why aren't there shadows of the cutout in the photograph if the cutout is placed on the lens?

Great shot, I tried this technique for hours, but could not get crisp hearts and the subject in focus. Gets a 10 from me but only if you pm me some tips!!

And I am sure she likes this picture. Very nice image and I really like the hearts. If somehow you could bring more of her face into the image it would be nice....it is a little stark in the transition on the left side.
