We were driving around St Armand Circle on Long Boat Key south of Tampa, FL (I was a passenger) when I spotted this little girl ahead. A almost hurt myself snatching my camera off the floorboard and getting the window open. I had just enough time to rip off one frame before we were passed. From her expression you can tell she was obviously pleased with herself. Have no idea how this will scorer, but I thought it was too cute not to submit.

Darn. I'd have thought this would score a little better than it did, especially with all the positive comments. I wasn't thinking it was gonna make top 10 or anything, but a 5.3? Just goes to show, you never know how these things will be received. Oh well. I'll just have to try harder next time. :)

Selective desat sure draws your eye to the subject. Anyone who's ever had kids will resonate with this.

Sofie was a willful child. Now, this isn't a surprise in itself, as willful children are a dime a dozen on most days, in most places, throughout the history of childhood, but Sofie was a little different.

Sofie had a gift.

On this day, as she strolled smug and confident, dressed in her favorite outfit that her mom almost didn't let her wear (and she certainly knew how to get people to change their minds now, didn't she?), the adults around her walked stiffly, anxiously, fearfully.

Sofie had a gift, and when your world is suddenly thrust into a monochrome existence due to the temper of a child that has been told no when wishing to wear an outlandish outfit, well, you end up letting that child wear that outfit.

So she strolled along, a brilliant mass of color in a black and white world of her making, and she decided then that she was having Ice Cream for dinner tonight, oh yes, and Pete forbid the one to try and stop her, because...

Sofie had a gift.

Try a partial selective desaturation on the b/w layer and see what you think.

She looks proud of herself for that accomplishment! I'm not sure the selective desaturation works well for me, but I suspect the original had a lot of distracting backgound colors and you had to do something with them. It's an awfully cute scene, though.

I struggle with selective desat. This sort of works though. It has a magical feel to it, and the lady looking down at the girl adds to that feeling.

I love little girls who wear costumes as day wear. I like the selective saturation in this one. Excellent.

LOL! Selective desat is perfect for this.

Bet this little girl grows up to be eminently self-confident; she's got a good start if her mom is supporting her choices already ;-)

Great idea and nice candid capture. I like the desat to isolate the girl but I find all the cars in the background a bit distracting ... not much you can do though for a candid street shot!
