I took this photo using a piece of posterboard as the background. It is an old nail I pulled out of a piece of wood from my garage. I only cropped off some areas, mostly the bottom, and adjusted hue and contrast.

The subject itself is interesting. Choice to crop out the tip of the nail creates interesting tension along with the limited depth of field. The plain background might create more interest (for me) if the resulting negative space were itself interesting. Think the processing is grainy and the color just a little too unreal--but maybe that's what you were going for...

i have always liked white backgrounds .... but this is just too ... bare . could have used the shadow more effectively

I like the pure white BG but otherwise it looks a little over processed for my taste. I would have scored it higher a little less processed.

At first when I looked at this I thought the all white background was pretty cool, then as I looked a little longer, I thought maybe it was just too much, then I looked longer and thought maybe it worked, then.... anyway, since I found it so compelling to look at, decided it was very good and...confused? hehehe :-) I am.
Anyway, yes, thought provoking and well done. I like it in the end. A great photo should make you want to look at it for whatever reasons.

complete DoF would have been good, this is just lacking the punch

Would the picture look better if it had a portrait crop? Nice shot anyway.

I really like this picture. I like the simplicity and the contrast between the nail and the whiteness around it(9)

I would like to see the rest of the nail. But nice white background.

Hmm, the color is rusty, but the nail has a very smooth texture that's emphasized by the catchlights, and that doesn't give a very rusty feel at all. Odd but visually interesting photo.

Brightness is hurting my eyes, I think you played with the levels just a bit too much.

Too much negative space and letting the focus fade out towards you is often a bad idea.

liked this shot alot....stark...pointedly directed at the nail for its sake only. many people are taking pics of objects by themselves but you're one of the few that when deciding to do so actually eliminate the surround debris and really focus just on the object itself. thanks

Nothing to this. It it was entirely in focus, there would at least be some texture to look at.
