 Yep joynim's right, it's a cicada shell clinging to a succulent. Overlayed with the peeling bark of a bottlebrush tree.

The overlay gives the appearance of the cicada clinging for dear life as whitewater rapids rush past - bizarre!

Looks like he's holding on for grim death. Overlay creates quite a storm in this image. Nicely done.
