the composition is solid but the shiny texture and marked bottom of the fruit gives the image a slightly less than appealing look

Sharp, but I would have liked a bit more DOF. Maybe just a personal preference.

The subject on the left side of the shot is more pleasing to the eye than the subject on the right - probably because so much of the subject on the right is OOF due to depth of field issues.

The really short DOF works well here - you have shown us so much of the surface texture of the fruit, it feels like you could touch it.
