 When I read the challenge title I though I’d just leave this one out. THEN I remembered my black Collani tea set and a pair of chopsticks I had at the back of one of the kitchen drawers ;-)
The lighting was extremely difficult because I wanted a dark moody effect on the dishes but wanted to catch the rice mid-air. I built up my makeshift light tent to keep reflections, glare, etc at a minumum and put my 2 flashes in more positions than in the Kama Sutra.
In the end, I had both flashes on top of the light tent pointing straight ahead. This kept the blacks, black but made the rice very bright. The reflection of the rice was o.k. and I couldn’t get the shot any better, so I decided to leave it at that.

When I first checked my score I was at 18 votes and 7.6! Talk about hyper-ventilating!
Anyway, reality set in and I levelled out at 6.6. Slowly climbed back up to nearly 6.9 these last few days and I’m over the moon about it!

A wonderful feel and texture. It reminds me of how inkstick looks when being ground in a stone for Sumi-e (Japanese brush painting).

On the whole page of thumbnails, this shot just jumps out at me. I love the sheen of the black. The texture on the top of the chopsticks looks great too.

nice setup. the rice is pretty overexposed in the top of the frame. you can see more details in the reflection below. still, nice composition

Nice overall tone and feel, but I'm not sure the falling rice really adds anything. Would like to see this without the rice, or with a small amount of "still" food in the bowl.

Nicely shot. Reminds me of something in an upscale gourmet magazine. I wish that the reflection of the rice at the bottom wasn't "cut off" if that makes sense. 7

This is incredible - beyond cookbook good, though I'm worried the border may cost you the blue since it cuts through the rice reflection - one of the nicest elements in the frame.
