Actually, I don't exactly know why folks build these. I used to see a lot when I worked on the Navajo Nation. I don't think they are to make bonfires, because I've seen them sit there for years. On the other hand, they don't exactly appear large enough to get into, at least not many people could fit. So, to answer your question Robert, I have no idea :-)
As for the 'rush' feeling, it may be partially because of the fact thatI was driving at the time I took this (as I have been for many of my lensbaby images). This technique works MUCH better with an autofocus lens, LOL! What I do is focus on something that I think will be a good distance while I'm at a stop sign, then I start driving and click away. I do NOT try to look through the viewfinder or focus while I'm driving, I swear! Most of what I get is crap of course, but every once in a while I get the sweet spot on something interesting. Doing this just adds to the serendipitous nature of the whole lensbaby thing for me.

While I'm confessing, all of these were also taken while I was driving:

Holy carp! While driving? The GAS one? I'm in awe.... I can't get the sweet spot standing still and TRYING! Perhaps I should try it while driving....

Well, I tried to take a couple of pics on the motorway last week, I may post one but decided it was better to concentrate on driving, almost took a pic of a pileup!

I doubt you'd have done better set up on a tripod Colleen, this is great and as well as the 'rush' you have a deep dof in the sweet spot.

I like this alot. The tones and the ink drawing effect to it. Too many sticks for a tepee, I think. Gosh, I would thinkit is for a bonfire, but if these stacks are there for years? Wonder what the story is?

Cool. I congratulate you on the technique. I've tried it a couple of times in town and scared myself to death.

Nice placement of focus. "Drive-baby"? :)

Pretty amazing for a drive-by. I wish I could get such good result with my lensbaby even when I look through the viewfinder! The rush Bear_Music refers to certainly adds to the impact of this one.

My first thought is a funeral pire, although I'm sure that's not it. Maybe it has some kind of significance to their culture. Maybe that should be my quest today - to figure it out. I do like it. It's as if I'd find it in a book about the Old West.

Your driveby shots turn out better than my premeditated shots! It would be interesting to know why they have them built if they don't burn them. It definitely doesn't look like it's a TP structure so I guess it's for burning, maybe for special ceremonies?

Drive by shooter? You don't seem to miss either. Remind me not to piss you off.

I vote for a bonfire. I'll bring the marshmallows. :)
This has an excellent range of out-of-focusness leading right to the wood pile. Fantastic!

Weird teepee shape; are we waiting for a bonfire? What's the backstory? I like the *true* vignette here, the edge lightening. The whole image has a sense of *rush* to it.
